First York to continue running bus services for University of York

  • Operator selected after tendering process
  • Expansion of university bus network
  • New routes include direct services to Designer Outlet at weekends
  • Return of term timetable for new academic year

First Bus in York is delighted to announce that it has secured a new contract to operate services for the University of York.

The operator was successful following a tendering process by the university. It means First York will continue to run services for the next five years.

Kayleigh Ingham, Commercial Director of First North & West Yorkshire, said: “We are really pleased to have been chosen by the University of York to deliver services for its students and staff.

“We will continue to build on our successful relationship and a commitment to further improving the journey experience for all customers. From the beginning of the new academic year we have added new services to increase connectivity to key destinations.”

There are two new services: U3 operates between Barbican, Fulford Road, Halifax College and Campus East Interchange, while U4 is a weekend-only service to Designer Outlet, Fulford Road and Campus East Interchange.

The previous 66 and 67 Services have been renamed U1 and U2 respectively. A UN1 service replaces to N67 ‘clubbers bus’ and will now operate in both directions from midnight until 04:22am.

Free shuttles will continue to connect key campus learning facilities and the Students’ Union.

Kris Fieldhouse, Assistant Director, Campus Services at the University of York, said: "We are confident that First Bus will continue to deliver a comprehensive service to our staff and students, ensuring we can provide a bus service for our community into the future.

“First Bus remains committed to maintaining the free of charge intercampus travel and we look forward to working closely with them to ensure that operations meet the evolving needs of our University community."

About First Bus

At First Bus, we’re on a mission to grow bus usage – so we’ll get behind initiatives that move people out of cars and onto the bus.

We’re one of the UK’s largest bus operators, transporting more than a million customers a day. We serve over 20% of the population of Great Britain with our local bus services, and over half of the UK’s top 15 most populated urban areas.

Transforming our business for the better, we’re putting our people and customers at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we’re the UK’s largest national bus operator to achieve real Living Wage employer status, cementing our position as an employer of choice in the sector.

We’re all about making journeys easier for our customers, which is why we were the first national bus operator to roll out Tap On, Tap Off payment technology across our entire fleet of around 4,500 buses. Our First Bus app has also been voted ‘best in class’ amongst UK bus operators.

First Bus is committed to operating a zero-emission bus fleet by 2035. We already operate over 600 zero-emission buses – that’s 14% of our overall fleet.

We’re passionate about giving back to the communities we serve, which is why we’re helping local businesses to progress their own decarbonisation journeys – giving them access to our charging hubs while our buses are on the road.

We also operate the Aircoach network in Ireland, Specialist Passenger Solutions, First Travel Solutions, York Pullman Bus Company and Ensignbus. First Bus is a division of FirstGroup.
